From Isolation to Creation:
Artists Respond to a Changing World
Smile making animal pictures
My name is Lizzie Beckerley. I’ve been drawing ever since I was old enough to hold a pencil.
I come from a family of painters, actors, singers, poets and writers, so “the arts” are very much “in the blood.” Sometimes it strikes me that I am a replica of my late father, whose favourite way to spend his day would be to put on his scruffy clothes and paint, whilst listening to music…… which was usually very loud. Like him, I spend the last part of my day cleaning the paint spatters from my hands and face.
Art is a path that I would have chosen many years ago had I not found myself to be the sole breadwinner for my five children, so the necessity to earn a living prompted me to follow a career in law and I practised as a solicitor in Cardiff for twenty years. However, if there’s one thing I’ve learnt in life, it’s to pursue what you have a passion for. Somebody said to me, “let your heart be your compass.” I decided that it was time to do just that and I finally hung up the old, well-worn suit in 2017.
I fell in love and moved to beautiful Herefordshire the following year to be with my partner. So a complete change in lifestyle for me, which is now one of tranquillity, happiness and all the time I need to create new art.
I love animals and I’ve always had a yearning to surround myself with them. So it’s not surprising that I’m drawn to painting them. Each animal has its own special personality and I do try to bring out a little bit of that character into my paintings. I paint subjects that make me smile and are just that little bit quirky. Just like my late father, I love how oil paints create bold, vibrant images and thus, they are my chosen medium.
Together with one of my sons, I produce high quality giclee prints from my paintings, on paper and canvas. My original oil paintings are also available for sale.
