From Isolation to Creation:
Artists Respond to a Changing World

Alexandra Allan

I’m ALEXANDRA ALLAN. My original degree was in literature, but over the course of many years, after working first in clay and then in stained glass, I realised I wanted to paint. In my art I often try to express or depict states of mind, ie internal landscapes – the inner worlds coexisting with the outer reality confronting us every day. There may be a narrative element; a painting may be based on a dream, a poem, or a piece of music. I love the power of line coupled with the emotional charge of colour, and am fascinated by the perennial challenge of trying to achieve rhythm in composition.

The five paintings I’m presenting for this exhibition were all made during 4-5 months of lockdown in 2020.

The first three paintings are all based on my interpretation of the random light patterns made by rays of sunlight as they fell on the walls and floor of my living-room during the months of isolation. I came to notice these patterns very keenly and decided to use some of them as a basis for composition of a painting. I was so grateful for their inspiration.

The final two paintings came from the emotional impact of the pandemic. I experimented with a monochrome palette here, a departure from my usual style.
